Chickens
JenEhr Chickens so popular – sold out until late June
This is the first year that we’ve sold out of our fabulous pasture raised chickens. During the winter, more of you feasted on roast chicken and a few more restuarants started adding them to their menus.
Leg/Thigh Packs and Backs for Stock are still available
So, what’s the big deal about buying roasting chickens from JenEhr Family Farm? Well, listen to the story.
Pasture raised poultry are different from the chickens that you buy in the store. Our chickens are raised locally by farmers you know.
We start with day-old chicks, brought home from a hatchery in Beaver Dam. After three weeks in the brooder house, they move outside to portable pens (the pens protect the birds from prairie hawks, owls and coyotes). We move the pens twice daily, giving the growing birds fresh feed, water, pasture and off their own feces. The result is chickens with better developed muscles, meat that’s not thin, mushy or watery like some store-bought chickens and flavor like grandma remembers.
Besides being outside, the chickens are raised without any added hormones, chemicals or anti-biotics in their diet. Their diet consists of corn-based feed in combination with foliage and insects from the pasture. At nine weeks, the birds are loaded for a trip to a USDA-inspected processing plant where they are processed and fresh frozen for your convenience. Order chickens separately or add them to your CSA box.
